CommentsAnjanette Marksberry says... On cloudy nights, our astronomy club members bring interesting programs among other antidotes to help while away the time in hope of cloud breaks. Thusly I have seen more than my share of astronomy type programs good and bad. A member brought "the visible universe" in which I had not previously viewed and immediately liked it. What I liked was that it panned and zoomed to all the interesting points of objects that I know to be interesting from my own research and observations. The pictures were clear and the detail was fine, most pictures were Not over zoomed, nor did they pass to quickly. The music was very well done, albeit strange and unique in an upbeat fashion. We watched it twice back to back that evening, the later muted. Since then, I have purchased this program and view it regularly, usually in the background. I would suggest that this program is geared towards virtually any person even remotely interested in astronomical objects in space. It is not in itself educational the way a fully narrated program is, rather an introduction tool to what exists in the seemingly endless space of our night skies. I give it 4.5 stars since the program is not perfect, but Amazon allows for only a rudimentary rating system so I do as most and average up. For our astronomy club, this program, as well as similar programs at the right price are ideal, thus it fills the room with light and color while we wait for clear skies. Not only are the pictures incredible, but it is packed with interesting facts not only about the data it obtains, but about how it came into being, and each of the missions that have served to give it the ability to provide those amazing images. this will become a treasured tennant of my bookshelf. Reallygood contents, images and material (paper issemiglossy, so easy toread almost at anyangle, no much reflection of light).I bought other 2 books about the Hubble telescope and 3 of them are complement. Very happy. Posted on April 8, 2011 Dannie Ovard says... This program actually surprised us. All imagery is very vivid and in perpetual motion which is in contrast to other DVD's we bought. The music was varying and overall added to the experience. It seemed like the makers were trying to set a different mood throughout the program. Overall, we're glad we got it. Now we just need a bigger TV... Posted on April 9, 2011 Sidney Berks says... This is the first Hubble photobook I ever bought. Probably because it's still operational snapping and capturing amazing pictures. Thus I figured it wouldn't be a wise thing to do; buying a static book while each month new and stunning images are being released. But because it's Hubble's 20th anniversary I figured I'd break the habit and buy this special NASA authorized book. I live in Holland so it took a couple of weeks for the book to arrive, but finally here it is. First impression: a nice sleek hardcover book with absolutely high quality picture resulution and colour. There's a fine balance between the amount of photo's and text, though in essence it's a photo-book. You won't be disappointed. Upon first reading I was really impressed by the image quality. Black is really deep-black instead of dark-grey and the resolution is just that high I felt compelled to take a magnifying glas to zoom in on all those beautiful pictures... And so I did, but I have to disappoint you: it's a book. If you want that zoom-in experience; go to the Hubble website. Anyway, the written contribution is impressive. Edward J. Weiler was Chief scientist for the Hubble telescope from 1979 till 1998, among other functions, he now is the current associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA. Pretty impressive, but that doesn't mean you have to fear thick and tiresome bureaucratic writing. The texts are accessible yet detailed, image captions detail the scientific essence without losing it's clarity, and there are quotes from actual astronauts who were out there deploying, repairing and servicing Hubble. That's just cool. Many pictures from the actual Hubble missions are there as well. Many of which were made before the digital camera age. So you would expect some graininess, especially with the 1990 and 1993 missions. But it's not there. The scans are crisp and compelling. They absolutely capture the beauty and awe of manned spaceflight. Verdict. This is a beautifully published book, ideal for coffee-table reading. The images are just straight out amazing! You'll spend hours peering over all the crisp details, it's just incredible. Downside are the images spanning two pages... It's annoying to see the luminous center of an amazing galaxy being buried in the central gutter; but hey surprise! It's a book. And that's the main downside of this book: it's a book. There will be many more beautiful Hubble images and discoveries for years to come and eventually those will end up in book-form as well. An until that day "Hubble: A Journey Through Space and Time" will be an impressive, graphic and up-to-date testimonial to Hubble's amazing service. Just don't forget to read the text, you will learn a lot. Last words: In his april 2010 NASA speech, President Obama told he had a Hubble picture of Jupiter hanging at the oval office wall. If that is so: I recommend him to put this book on his desk as well. Posted on April 9, 2011 Toi Bigony says... Short of actually going into space and seeing with your own eyes through a powerful telescope such as the Hubble, this is the next best thing. This publication is for your library of Astronomy, bar none. Posted on April 10, 2011 Lavona Bendick says... What can you say about this beautiful book about Hubble? It's great. Really, really, really great. Unbelievable photos with text that weaves itself throughout the volume as if you're in the milky way right from your own living room. Out of this world! Run, don't walk...actually type as fast as you can and order now from Amazon! Posted on April 10, 2011 Leonie Rotundo says... It's a very simple and interesting book with many big and clear pictures. The reason of four stars lies in Amazon's careless package that lead to a little corner and spine breakage of the book. Posted on April 12, 2011 Richard Headington says... I rather enjoyed this DVD. The DVD images are stunningly brilliant in color and clarity. The music was very well done with sort of a groovy motion slide show thing going on. Since i've seen it half dozen times already, I would certainly recommend this to any space enthusiast. Posted on April 13, 2011 Delta Brits says... My daughter is a space nut and loved the amazing collection of space images. The music, which I prefer, is exceptionally good and fits very nicely in the context of this music DVD. It is truly amazing to me that we have the ability to capture such beauty from so far away. I gave it 4 stars, thus the menu could have had more selection options. My daughter said 5 because it is her DVD. Posted on April 16, 2011 Leave a Comment |
