In general, shoot from afar whenever possible. Often, you don't even need to get close in order to hit them; they just need to be in your direct firing line. Shooting from a different angle works too.



Before entering any battle area or before using a stone key, be sure you're armed with the right ammo (flame seems most useful, if you already have it).



Eat meat whenever you find it.



Venus Flytraps - the stationary ones are easy to kill with 3-4 rocks/flame arrows. Some suddenly pop out of small holes in the ground, so you have to watch out for these 'dimples' when running into an open space. You can run right past them without getting bitten, provided you don't stop within strike distance. If you want to kill them, they have to be 'lured' out first. Go near the hole then quickly retreat out of biting range and turn around quickly to face it and shoot (flame/rock). You may need to do this at least a couple of times for each one. Side-to-side is easiest for me rather than up-and-down.



Bee swarms - shoot with flame about 3-4 times. Some swarms can be shot at from a safe distance. If they're already attacking you, be sure to be facing them and just keep shooting. Some swarms only go back and forth on a single short path, so you can flame-shoot them from behind a stone statue (or an ice formation) without going near.



Bears - as long as you don't run helter-skelter into the middle of the battle zone, they're often not aware of you right away and just move about in right angles, which makes it easy to shoot at them from a distance. If one happens to notice you and stops moving to face you, just run out of the way first; it'll eventually calm down again & you can resume shooting; it'll take about 6 shots or so to make it disappear.



Wild boars / pigs - harder to kill than bears, they move more quickly, but they also move in right angles. So just fire a shot, move out of the way, fire again. Repeat as necessary. Put as much distance between you and them so that you'll have time to fire a shot. You may need to run around quite a bit. If there's a stone statue in the way, they sometimes get stuck there for a few moments, so you can sometimes use that to gain some time.



Flying - to fly more slowly, place your stylus on or just slightly ahead of Toothless. This will usually give you more time to maneuver.
