This is how the story goes: After 10 years in prison, Driver has a singular focus - to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do list in hand, he's finally on his mission... but with two men on his trail - a veteran cop just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman with a flair for the art of killing and a newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also the hunted. It's a do or die race to the list's finish as the mystery surrounding his brother's murder deepens, and new details emerge along the way hinting that Driver's list may be incomplete. The cast led by Dwayne Johnson (as Driver) & Billy Bob Thornton (as Cop) is great! I've always wanted to like Dwayne Johnson as an actor. He was so entertaining when he was The Rock, why can't his movies be just as entertaining? Unfortunately his best received films are the more family oriented ones and watching an ex-wrestler who used to talk about his love for pie and "laying the smackdown on all your candy asses" seems a bit bittersweet. Films like Faster are what Johnson should be sticking to, but it doesn't live up to its potential and results in another flat action film. Wasted potential is the perfect way to describe Faster. Dwayne Johnson spends more time walking around looking pissed off than he does killing anyone or actually saying anything at all. Billy Bob Thornton doesn't do much of anything either as his character struggles between being a drug addict who doesn't amount to anything to a police officer who's about to retire and get full benefits who is also trying to get his family back together again. He spends most of his screen time drowning in his pathetic life. Then there's Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter who seems to be brought into the film to do nothing more than show up, cry a little, and say stupid things. Nothing the actors did really helped drive the story forward. The cinematography fluctuated between being interesting and being incredibly annoying. Right when something like the way the camera was placed while the driver was driving or something as simple as reloading a gun was done in a way that seemed original to catch your attention, the film would turn around and throw shaky camera techniques at you for no reason or the scenes that caught your eye would be too brief to really make up for the mediocrity of the rest of the film. The most interesting aspect lies within the final minutes and relates to the hired killer going after the driver. That concept alone that's about the length of a one minute conversation is better than Faster as a whole. Dwayne Johnson seems to have better luck with family films, but I think his fans would rather see him in R-rated action films since his physique and film presence fit that genre best. If he could find a film that was like Faster with a meatier role that gave him more lines and had better writing, it'd probably be a lot more satisfying. The kills in Faster should have been the highlight since the film revolved around the driver gaining revenge for his brother, but they fell short. Everything about Faster did. I was completely expecting Johnson to either turn himself over to the authorities or kill himself to be with his brother at the end of the film. The driver received the revenge he so desperately seeked and did it in a nonchalant, hot-shot vigilante kind of way to let everyone know it was him doing it. Yet police can't seem to keep up with him and he just kind of drives off into the sunset at the end. It felt like Faster was left open ended for nothing more than sequel purposes alone, which is the weakest form of a cop out for a movie ending. Coincidentally, a film called Faster managed to feel twice as long as its 98 minute duration. In the end, Faster contains elements from both Gone in Sixty Seconds and Taxi Driver, which should result in an excellent film. Instead we're left with an action film that uses these elements at face value; it contains the fast cars and intense chases of Gone in Sixty Seconds with the uneasy and unpredictable shootouts that are reminiscent of Taxi Driver but Faster lacks the depth, star power, enjoyment factor, strong cast, or lasting value these two films still have today. If you plan on seeing this film, you better be sure because that's a long dark road you're headed down (sorry, couldn't resist) and that road is nothing more than a pointless detour from greater things. Posted on June 28, 2011 Nanci Wishon says... I think this is a good action film and I do like the Rock Dwayne Johnson but man oh man he really needs some acting lessons. The Dwayne Johnson looks tough as nails and like he could take on 5 guys and win but can not pull off any emotion other then anger. The rest of the cast is great and this could be part of the issue since we have all these good actors along side one very bad actor, it just stands out more. Billy Bob Thornton pulls off his role as the junky cop with a checkered past and Maggie Grace is great in her role as hit man number ones wife. Lots of action and a twisted up mystery is why you should see this film but most will figure out what is going on faster then they should. I myself like to guess what is going to happen and am always happy when it do's not go my way. Ignore the Rocks bad acting and see this film anyway, it's worth it. Posted on June 29, 2011 Nita Belsheim says... That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but this book makes you so aware of how time is used to sell everything. America is obsessed with time, after reading this book I began to see its influence everywhere. I loved the concept that there is a negative correlation between free time and success. I makes you realize the folly of it all. After reading this book, when you see people who are running around, on their cell phones, trying of organize and multi-task their lives (you may be one of them) you'll smile a bit. They're places where doing things faster is better (computers for example), but for many things there comes a point where faster is not better, or cheaper, or anything other than faster. It makes you think, actually if you stop what your doing, clear your head, and think about how time has influenced your life, then this book has achieved its purpose (I think, but then again I don't have a cell phone, and I rarely multi-task so what do I know). No pun intended, but the book is a fast read. The style is engaging and the material is just great. I really liked Choas (a previous book by James Gleick), but this is the his best book. I would recommend this to everybody. It won't change your life, but it will shift your perception a little. Posted on June 29, 2011 Shonda Nabarowsky says... This movie is very fast paced and filled to the brim with action and suspense. It's almost like a classic Grindhouse film. Dwayne Johnson is back with a vengeance. Known only as Driver, he is released from prison after 10 years and goes on a shooting rampage to avenge the death of his brother. Meanwhile, he is being hunted too by a cop and a hitman. I highly recommend you go FASTER!!! Posted on June 30, 2011 Candi Huitron says... I've read this book several times over the last year or two. I enjoy it every time. There are many interesting anecdotes about how life has accelerated almost beyond control. Curiously enough, the book itself goes at a slow pace. There is a refreshing difference between the relaxed pace of the book and the frantic pace of the subject matter. Reading it straight through might not be the best way to approach this book. I enjoy reading one chapter at a time at night as a way to relax from my own fast-paced life. Posted on July 2, 2011 Ricky Geffrard says... They used to show this kind of movie at the drive-in. Didn't need to think or take you away from more important back seat activity. But you would pay attention when the noise got loud. Good for what it is. Posted on July 4, 2011 Homer Betschman says... I had a similar experience with Gleicks' previous book 'Chaos': I had trouble putting it down and ended up reading the entire book in 2 days...in 'Faster' he has clearly mastered the style of writing loosely refered to as 'pop-science'...while this 'anecdote mixed with fact' style has been imitated in many other books of this sort Gleick manages to grab the reader by both lapels and doesn't let go until they turn the last page...while the content of 'Faster'is less engaging than 'Chaos' his style keeps you turning pages...it is the perfect book for a transatlantic flight! Posted on July 5, 2011 Myriam Harsin says... This movie has The Rock in it, so that alone makes it worthy to watch... He does a good job in his acting role, even though he does not talk alot in it... He also looks the part, with his awesome buff body... However, this movie could have been a lot better! Simply put, there just wasn't enough action! As the previous reviewer stated, The Rock mostly skates through the movie Mad, Distraught, and the actions scenes are decent at best. When there is action, anyway... Also agreeing with the previous reviewer, I think this is the right type of movie for The Rock to be in, but there needs to be more content, action & more of The Rock kicking butt! The Rock needs to do more Jason Stathem type of movies... A LOT MORE ACTION... The Car that The Rock drives in the movie ROCKS!!!!!!!! I want one just like it... I would recommend waiting for the DVD release... Thanks Posted on July 6, 2011 Shavonne Setlock says... A man gets out of prison after ten years and immediately goes on a murder spree to avenge the death of his brother. Throw in a cop for good measure; then add a hit man for the semblance of a plot. This movie is so bad and stupid that I could not help but to laugh at its illogical setup. It is easy to figure out the plot twist because...well, none of the characters are really developed. R: Violence throughout, language, drug use. (Appropriately rated.) Posted on July 9, 2011 Leave a Comment |
