@finalfantasygirl09 I totally agree with you. The others simply don't get how horrible and selfish Gilbert's decision was to her husband.

@ArwenZvn the lesson from Gilbert is whether you're a MAN or a WOMAN, you better know what you TRULY want before you get married. And you better understand that entering marriage means FOREVER. We no longer live in a society that compels men and women to marry for survival. Marriage now is largely a choice for love and companionship. So to enter it in HASTE nowadays and WITHOUT FULL UNDERSTANDING of the responsibilities is IMMATURE AND INEXCUSABLE. A person can always opt to NOT get married.

@ArwenZvn again, the truly important lesson from Gilbert's clunky tale of new-age hokum is that people should do the SELF-EXAMINATION exercise BEFORE committing to someone in an important institution like marriage. One should really be honest himself/ herself if she is the type to stay around for the long-haul despite the many responsibilities and demands the commitment entails. THAT's the REAL lesson and not the ability to chuck a marriage just because, oh dear, I'm unhappy. Please.

@eyestrained07 I never said her actions are heroic and neither did she. But as you said, gilbert's problem is common. That's why the book was a best seller because many women are or were in this situation. Also, it's impossible to know what you truly want from your life. She did what she wanted, yes, after some mistakes and yes, it was maybe a little selfish but I wish every one had her guts to follow their dreams. NOBODY'S PERFECT.

@ArwenZvn to laud Gilbert's acts as inspiring and heroic is so juvenile. I would have admired her more if she'd bolted out of the relationship BEFORE the wedding. As for men and women being different...the only real difference between men and women is that women do have a biological clock and having babies is a choice women have to figure out before the window of opportunity closes. Given that is already OPEN KNOWLEDGE, I think it's up to women to figure that out early BEFORE commiting to sum1

@ArwenZvn Not Heroic yet u view her actions as "having the guts to follow her dreams"? I don't begrudge people for "following their dreams." As long as it's not done at the expense of other people's feelings and well-being. Her story is difficult to swallow bcoz she followed what SHE wanted regardless of the commitment she made to her husband. And it's impossible to not know what you want from life? huh. People DO know what they want and don't want if they have the guts to admit it.

Reinaldo Hatheway says...

@ArwenZvn No marriage is perfect and it will ALWAYS have problems. It's up to the couple to decide to WORK on it. the important thing is they both respect the commitment they entered. Gilbert's problem is so common and nothing extraordinary. Gilbert's case is a person who entered the marriage state without ANY understanding of what SHE TRULY WANTED IN LIFE. So when the REAL commitment started to sink in (children) that's when she had to face up that she wasn;t cut out for it.
