For probably the last 5-10 years, I haven't seen a good Hollywood comedy. They all seem to be about gross-out scenes, teenage losers, or awkward sexual situations.Fortunately, "Date Night" breaks that trend by combining two hilarious leads with a genuine plot that can be enjoyed on all levels.

For a basic plot summary, this movie follows the exploits of Mr. and Mrs. Foster (Carell and Fey) who (on their one impulse move) steal a dinner reservation from another couple and get drawn into a blackmail plot that has them running all over town looking for a way out.

In terms of comedy, "Date Night" hits on all cylinders, thriving on the unmistakable style of Carell. As so often happens in the world of funnymen, Carell may be completely irrelevant a year or two from now, but currently he is golden. If you like him on "The Office", you'll laugh at this effort as well.Tina Fey also shines in a co-starring role, providing a more direct approach to laughs rather than Carell's subtly.

What really sets this movie apart from others, though, is its heart. This is a film that can be enjoyed at a deeper level than just laughs. It touches on common themes like family, stagnating marriage, and trying to find that youthful excitement in life.Besides the funny business, "Date Night" will make you both think and feel in equal proportions.

Thus, I thoroughly enjoyed this film and highly recommend it to all viewers, especially Carell junkies. It will have you laughing one minute, and contemplating your life the next.

Loved this movie and thought it was one of my favourites for the year.I really enjoyed the car chase. It is brilliant and one of the best I have ever seen.If you have not seen this movie give it a chance because I enjoyed it so much I purchased the movie in Australia which did not have the directors take on the movie. The movie with the extras was available in America so I purchased it again through Amazon.com.It was well worth the extra money.Do yourself a favour and catch this movie as it is very funny and moves along at a great pace. Also you can see they are doing a lot on the fly and it works.Everytime I watch it I catch something I had missed prior, as there is a lot going on.Enjoy, I did.

When I saw the commercials of Date Night I thought it looked hilarious, especially with Tina Fey (SNL) and Steve Carell. But I learned that the commercials show the only funny scenes in the whole movie.

The movie is basically about a couple (Fey and Carell) that are having a busy and unexciting life. All they seem to do is work hard and take care of their kids, but all of this family stuff in this movie seems so fake Hollywood to their expensive home to buying their kid's friend's birthday present. The couple has a weekly(?) date night but even that is unexciting, but one date night they decide to go out to a "new expensive/exclusive" club in New York City. They decide to go without a reservation, when their are addressed to wait in the bar the husband decides to take a reservation of another couple that didn't show up. During their expensive meal, they are interrupted by two men who take them to a dark alley and tells the couple to give them the "flash drive." After that the couple is on a long chase to clear their real names and find the real couple who took the flash drive and was a no show for their reservations at the club.

The movie has some really funny parts but not even Carell's jokes and the Audi and Cab hooked together by the grills trying to escape the Police will satisfy me from the long dull story. The movie got to the point where I found myself thinking "what and why are they doing this." I managed to watch the whole movie but afterward I was just thinking I should have turned it off 45 minutes ago.

Date Night was a dull movie night for me and all I can say is "I am glad I just rented it."

This movie was an awsome movie! It started a little slow but I was laughing so hard I had to go to the bathroom even before the movie was over! So I had to pause it just so I could go!

Get the movie!

To break up the monotony of their marriage, their jobs and date night, New Jersey couple Phil and Claire Foster (Steve Carell and Tina Fey) throw caution and commonsense to the wind and go to an exclusive restaurant in the City for dinner. Having failed to get a reservation early, they steal another couple's and the shenanigans begin. Two men approach them and suggest that they have stolen something from their boss (Ray Liotta). Once they escape and head for the police station, they soon realize that the two people chasing them were copes and therefore believe "no cops" can be trusted. There are ensuing car chases, shoot outs, crooked cops, bad politicians and other hysterical situations that all produce a few laughs and made for a decent movie. I was entertained. After all, I didn't have to think too hard. The story was simple, short and to the point. The characters and actors were a riot. Mark Walberg (who must have refused to wear a shirt) had an opportunity to show his comedic talentsvia his interactions with Carell (who constantly asked him "for the love of God" to put on a shirt) and Fey (who acted all googly-eyed, goofy, and constantly batted her eyes). Common and his sidekick (Jimmi Simpson) were perfect as crooked cops (little dialogue but always physically present).Taraji P. Henson, acts well as the cop who knows something isn't right but isn't sure what it is. William Fichtner was the perfect "dirty" DA. And as the two try to make it home safely (to their kids, and now it would seem their perfect lives, which don't seem to be boring any longer), they realize just how extraordinary and in love they really are.

My wife and I saw Date Night yesterday, and we both found it to be a lot of fun. The first half of the movie is better than the second, but it's still OK. Tina Fey and Steve Carrell are great together, they have some definite comic chemistry and do a great job in the movie. All the banter and action is fun and funny. We both felt the movie could have been even better, but overall it was funny, good light entertainment for the evening. Especially recommended for adults with kids.

Carell and Fay had the potential to be a powerfully funny duo in this "what else could possibly go wrong" movie, but, alas it was not to be.I mean, the story line was such that the movie itself couldn't seem to decide what it wanted to be, so how could Carell and Fay?

OK, imagine that you are a screenwriter and you want to catch people's attention...what do you throw into the film? How about a couple of people looking to spice up their lives, even in a small way?How about a crooked DA?How about organized crime? How about gunfire? How about a car chase scene? How about trashing a really, really nice car?How about a mercenary, former-military, intelligence expert? How about good cops gone bad? How about setting all of this in NYC?

Yes, if you watch this movie you get all that and more.More?!What more could there be?That's what I thought. As s result I couldn't really figure out what kind of movie this was supposed to be.Was it a comedy? There were a few funny bits, but not enough to carry the show. Was there suspense?Sort of, here and there. Was there action?OK, there was, about the time the original one joke this movie was trying to build itself around started to get extra tired.

All in all I was happy to have seen this film, once, but there is no need to see it twice, at least in my opinion.

I like Carell and Fay, but there really was not enough chemistry or pizzaz to carry the film.

I am hovering between liking and barely liking this film, so I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars, but it was more of a 3 star than a 2 star movie for me.

3 stars

I'mglad I waited to see this on DVD...just because it really translates well to the small screen. I found the movie funny and loved all the little "skits" within each story that went on.The table chatter was cute, the whole James Franco scene was hysterical and the on-going "drawers are open" was great. The car chases were over the top but were done really well. Steve and Tina have a natural chemistry that wasn't forced or top-heavy. Both held their own against each other. Mark Wahlberg had a great part..shirtless the entire time. Cute movie to rent for you and hubby or partner to watch when you don't want to think too much. Extras included were outakes and some cast interviews. The outtakes were the best parts of course...sometimes funnier than what made it into the movie!

In order for a movie packed full of unlikely plot-developments and general silliness like DATE NIGHT,a cast that's easy to love who have razor sharp comic timing and mastery of their tone is needed.Fortunately, Steve Carrell and Tina Fey meet all three requirements, and thus, DATE NIGHT works on many levels.

Carrell and Fey play a nearly middle aged married couple with kids. They have a comfortable suburban life, and are still fond of each other, but they are also clearly just a bit worn out by life."Date Nights" for them consist of going to a local steak restaurant, with worn-out d

The Fosters start this movie as some of the blandest people on earth. Their suburban life has settled into such a rut that even their personal time, as a couple, fits a regular schedule - their "date night," away from the kids. The story really gets under way at a toney new restaurant, the kind with reservations made weeks in advance, where they show up on a whim. Using the name on someone else's reservation, they get a seat. Unfortunately, they picked the name of someone in big trouble with a mob boss, some crooked cops, and others you don't want mad at you.

Fey and Carrell carry this through beautifully as naifs trying to claw their way out of the situation. Of course, it escalates as it goes along, with a few spectacularly funny moments along the way. They save the best for last, though, in a final faceoff with the bad guys. You'll have to see it for yourself, but don't mess with mom when her temper finally snaps.

It's commodity entertainment with some amusing moments. Some days, that's enough.
