The production quality wasn't bad but the information presented was pathetically biased and incorrect. The slant about how Jesus killed all the old gods was stupid and unprovable. Then they got several details horribly wrong. Just one instance is where they say that Freya was Thor's sister. It takes about 3 minutes of research to see that there is absolutely NO grounds to say this as they were from separate tribes of Gods and had different parents. Last I checked you had to have the same parents to be brother and sister. If they would pull one easily falsified "fact" out of their butts like that then it is a little hard to swallow the other parts. Also, the section on Hades was pretty lame. Apparently in Christian mythology Hades was god of the underworld/place of the dead before Christ despite the fact that their doctrine was that there was only one God EVER! The ties between pre-christian and Christian mythologies is contrived and poorly argued. Posted on June 17, 2011 Julio Breger says... I like the documental about mithology because is here where the mithology takes life, is excelent for collection Posted on June 17, 2011 Mauro Siad says... I purchased this documentary for my 8 eight year old son. He has read all the Percy Jackson novels and is now heavily into greek mythology. Of course this otherwise excellent documentary was not made for children. It depicts rather violent scenes and it's descriptions of heros, monsters and demigods fueled my sons imagination. It is an excellent documentary, researching the possible origins for myths, but to be viewed with caution when children are around. My son still loved it, and it did trigger continuative discussions in our family! Posted on June 18, 2011 Lashawn Skokowski says... I thought it was HORRIBLE!!! We wanted to see a documentary on Greek Mythology. We were highly disappointed by how the myths represented did not actually follow the classic stories. History Channel should be ashamed to have their name on this series. Posted on June 20, 2011 Solange Frenger says... I couldn't get past the first episode. The animation is great, there's some good insight into the nature/personality of Zeus, and the basic timeline was on target, but it was full of propaganda that shouldn't be in a decent documentary. For instance, the insistence that Jesus killed Zeus and that Zeus is no longer worshiped today. What an insult to the thousands of modern Greek pagans that are fighting for the right to worship as they choose.(Because of the orthodox Christian Church's relationship to their government.)Why was that even in there? There was also huge gaps in Zeus's upbringing while in hiding from his father. Then there was the cliche argument that ancient man made up these Gods because they couldn't explain the natural world, and were frightened by lightening storms, but oh, now we have science.I'm sure everyone holds out their science books when confronted by tornadoes and lightening today. We owe the ancient Greeks so much, I'd have loved to have seen them treated with more respect. In my opinion, if a movie can bring about a feeling of great imagination, interesting plot twists, AND teach you about the history of a culture's basis then you have a movie of great proportions. To me Clash of the Titans brought about all of this. Mythology and Greece have always been a large facination for me, and to see many of the Greek myths fleshed out on the big screen was a true piece of magic. Movie buffs will be pleased to see many Hollywood actors in this gem as well. From Laurence Olivier and Harry Hamlin, to Maggie Smith and Burgess Meredith. Considering the time in which the movie was made, the special effects were outstanding as well. Even the imaginary characters of Medusa, Cerberus, Pegasus, Calibos, and the Crikon stand out and bring quite a bit of humanism to a very fictional film. I highly recommend this film to anyone with imagination and lots of heart. Posted on June 21, 2011 Rheba Penza says... A docu-drama of sorts.I enjoyed the insight of those presenters and the clarification on various points that I may have forgotten from High School.I did find the acting a bit stiff even for a Documentary but it accomplished the task. This would be a good intro for a freshman in HS who is not sure what to make of the Greek Gods of old.It may help inspire them to read and learn more. I would buy again as a gift. Posted on June 22, 2011 Yu Probst says... I teach Latin in Middle School.Clash of the Gods is a great aide to explaining the workings of mythology to teenagers. It most definately holds their interest while at the same time conveying a great deal of information. Clash of the Titans is a great movie, and I'm so glad that it is coming out FINALLY on DVD. I remember seeing this for the first time when I was a kid and just really enjoying the film. All the monsters look great, and Madusa especially should look like she had a makeover on the DVD. Also, there seems to be some nice extras which I'm looking forward to checking out. However I was disappointed that it was Warner Bros responsible for Clash of the Titans because I knew then that this great movie was coming in a cheesy looking Snap Case. C'mon Warner Bros get with the program. I, along with many people that I know, hate those things, they are akward looking and just look plain cheap. They definitely don't look half as nice as Keep Cases. A petition should be made to make them change this. Posted on June 29, 2011 Leave a Comment |
